Origin of Reflexology

Surrey Reflexology, The origins of Reflexology in EgyptA widely held theory is that reflexology originated in China and Egypt 5000 years ago. The oldest documentation depicting the practice of Reflexology was unearthed in Egypt, it was found in the tomb of an Egyptian physician. In 1966, Doreen Bayly brought Reflexology into Britain.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy increasingly used alongside conventional medical treatment. It is well established in the complementary health field and is effective in stimulating the body's natural healing ability to overcome many adverse reactions to stress and enhance the qualify of life.

It is a therapeutic acupressure on the feet applied by either thumb or fingers. Every organ, structure and system of the body is mirrored in the feet. By stimulating the 7,200 nerve endings in the feet, each connected to the rest of the body through the brain and spinal cord, signals are sent along the sensory paths to the organs etc. Reflexology helps deal with congestions and blockages thus encouraging normalisation of the body functions and it's capacity for self-healing.

Reflexology is the technique of applying gentle pressure to reflex points on the feet and hands to bring about a state of deep relaxation, stimulate the body's healing process, and help a person return to a state of balance and well-being. (top)

Reflexology promotes and encourages total body relaxation, restful sleep, and generally gives a wonderful sense of well being.
Reflexology brings balance and harmony to all body systems. It can calm or stimulate according to the needs of the body. High levels of stress can often lead to a wide range of health problems.

The beauty of Reflexology is that it does not discriminate. There are no boundaries or limitations. It is suitable for most people including young and old. It should not be regarded as a cure-all, but most conditions can respond to treatment.

Reflexology is an effective method of reducing the physical and emotional stresses and anxieties of today’s society.

Gemma has found that she has been able to help her clients with the following conditions:

  • Migraines and headaches
  • Sinus problems
  • Stress related conditions and anxiety
  • PMS and menopausal symptoms
  • Hormone related problems
  • General aches and pains including arthritis
  • Frozen shoulder and sciatica
  • Pregnancy related issues
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Digestive disorders
  • Constipation
  • Fluid Retention
  • ME & chronic fatigue
  • Hypertension
  • Preventative therapy

And the list goes on…….

Reflexology can also be extremely beneficial for fertility, pregnancy and birth and for those living with cancer.

I have found that conditions caused by stress seem to respond particularly well to Reflexology. It is estimated that 80% of all health issues are stress related, this covers quite a few problems. In fact I believe that 80% is a conservative estimate and that nearly all health problems are in some way related to stress or tension. (top)

What does the treatment involve?

If you have not had a treatment before, then your first session would involve a detailed case history. Medical history will be examined, including all current medication, any illness or problem that you may be suffering from, and a visual check of the feet for hard skin, corns, bone structure etc. The information gained will be used to develop your personal reflexology treatment plan.

Gentle pressure on the reflex point is then applied to both feet or hands, which enables me to detect and correct imbalances in the corresponding parts of the body. It is these imbalances that can give sensations, either in the form of a tender spot or a prickling sensation.

Reflexology can be used safely for most medical conditions and alongside current medication and treatment from your doctor. If after taking a comprehensive medical history from you at your first appointment, there is any doubt as to whether Reflexology would be suitable for you, I may ask you to seek your GP’s permission.

Ticklish Feet: Clients who believe they have very sensitive or ticklish feet, initially fear that this might be a problem. However, my experience is that this disappears in my consulting room.

After care advice and handy tips

Following a treatment you may feel deeply relaxed with a sense of well-being. However, reactions to treatment can occur due to a release of toxins within the body, such as tiredness, aching muscles or headaches. These reactions are normal and transitory. It is therefore advisable to follow the after care advice outlined below to reduce these effects.

  • If possible always take 5-10 minutes out after treatment to sit and relax
  • Always drink plenty of water
  • If possible avoid stimulants for 24 hours i.e. tea, coffee, alcohol etc.

How Much Does it Cost?

Initial consultations last for one and a half hours and cost £35

Subsequent sessions last one hour and cost £30

Typically, I find that a client requires four to six sessions to overcome or alleviate a specific problem.

Home visits can be made in special circumstances (top)
